KEA was founded in 1857 and has represented teacher and student interests for more than 165 years. It is made up of more than 44,000 educators and support professionals across the commonwealth as the largest labor organization in KY. KEA is dedicated to protecting and supporting our public schools, our students, and our educators. The group works for improved education funding, safer schools, better materials, smaller class sizes, the empowerment of educators and parents, and most importantly, the right to a quality public education for every student across the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Nominated by Governor Andy Beshear, Colmon became the first African American elected to serve as the Chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party in 2020. Previously, he served two terms as the Executive Vice President of the Young Democrats of America and served for eight years as the Executive Assistant and Senior Advisor to Governor Steve Beshear.
